After doing photography, drawing, watercolor and pastel work, I began to get back into oil painting in 1985. I started working on some still lifes and then landscapes. When the work became ready to show, the reviewer described them as "American School" paintings. Unfortunately, I have few of these left today.But, because of that review, I was motivated to begin to abstract the colors and shapes within the landscapes so that they represented more of my own vision of what the New Mexico landscape and light revealed to me. My initial paintings became brighter and also I started to visually incorporate the desert hues into everything I made. I would go to various locations, usually with a friend, to begin the composition of each landscape and the when I was back in the studio I would paint them from recollection and incorporate my feelings of the light and color of the day. In this section specifically, I have tried to present the work chronologically from the oldest forward. |
