I began to get interested in creating sculptured works in 1993 as I was manipulating the semi abstracted landscapes I was working on. First, I began to add wood to the outside edges of the canvas, to alter the recognizable shape of the rectangles. The intent was to go beyond the standard line of the canvas and still maintain a flat surface. I initially just started to use different length stretcher bars and then began adding wood to the shaped canvas. This eventually led me to start to look at the possibility of developing constructions with wood and no canvas used at all. I began cutting sections of plywood and screwing and glueing them together, but they were becoming a little too heavy. Then I was able to get scrap wood from a neighbor who made nice small step ladders with carved and painted animals on each side of the step. So I was able to use his cut outs in my pieces and get some very interesting shapes as a result. As I pursued this vision, I began to move further away from the wall and the pieces took on more of a sculptural look. That then led me to really begin to try and emphasize the negative space in the work, actually the air and as a result, to open the space up and use the air and shadows that were created by light as part of the piece. I continued with this style until about 1998. These pieces are a sample of some of the results and the best, for me being the period I began seeing them as music. |
